  • PMU and the COVID-19 Vaccine – When Is It Safe to Get Permanent Makeup?

With the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine, things are slowly getting back to normal, but we still have to follow all Coronavirus prevention measures, and pay special attention to what we can and can’t do before and after getting the vaccine.

One of the things you should avoid, for short wait after the shot, is getting PMU (permanent makeup). So in case you’ve been eyeing microblading or another PMU treatment and getting the COVID-19 vaccine, here’s what you should know in order to stay safe and healthy.

The COVID-19 vaccine is still very new and the ways it can affect certain treatments and procedures haven’t been studied yet

However, doctors generally advise waiting at least 2 weeks before and after getting any dose of the vaccine before getting a tattoo or PMU.

Also, tattooing triggers a response from your immune system and could weaken it, which might lead to complications and a strong reaction to the vaccine.

But please don't let this prevent you from getting the Cosmetic service that you want! Below will explain in great detail what you need to do to get the best possible result.

Is It Safe to Get Permanent Makeup After Covid Vaccine?

All PMU procedures involve breaking the skin. That trauma triggers a response from your immune system. This, combined with the ever-present risk of infections whenever the skin is opened is quite strenuous on your immunity.

The COVID-19 shot is a much bigger strain on the immune system and the body needs time and strength to build immunity. During this process, your immune system is much more alert and will react more aggressively to any changes or trauma.

How Can the COVID-19 Vaccine Affect Permanent Makeup?

Since the beginning of the distribution of the Covid vaccine, permanent makeup artists have noticed some of their clients started developing unusual reactions to the treatment. They eventually realized that clients who’ve recently been vaccinated experience unpredictable reactions that the vaccine even affect pigment retention.

Your body can react to the PMU procedure in different ways if you’ve recently had the COVID-19 shot, or are planning to get one soon. The reactions include:

  • swelling

  • increased sensitivity during and after the procedure

  • pigment rejection.

Since the shot makes your immune system more alert, it will fight any foreign substance more aggressively. This can significantly diminish pigment retention.

This is also why it’s possible that the pigment retention won’t be satisfactory. Your body will try to get rid of the foreign substance – the pigments â€“ via the excreted lymph fluid. So if you’ve recently received the covid vaccine (within days ago, or up to 2 weeks) any PMU may not work its magic if you have recently received the covid vaccine.

That said, of course, it’s most definitely not impossible to get both permanent makeup and COVID vaccine. You just have to wait out the advised time period between the two – at least 2 weeks!

Extra note: The COVID-19 vaccine can have different side effects. If you get the shot and a PMU treatment around the same time, it may be impossible to distinguish between the side effects of getting the vaccine and PMU complications like infections.
